TDOT PROJECT:

The subject project was a CMGC project completed by TDOT. The designers, construction manager, and general contractor were charged with replacing a 75-year-old structure in the heart of Nashville called the Broadway Viaduct. The Viaduct spans five (3) active CSXT yard tracks, two (2) mainline tracks, and 11th Avenue South. The existing structure had attached to the existing girders several AT&T fiber ducts which were required to be abated for asbestos and remain in space throughout the demolition and reconstruction processes. Using a series of cranes and other equipment, the contractor used ABC methods to disassemble the structure and reconstruct the new structure during an eight-week closure of Broadway and 11th Avenue South.

Mr. Lanius coordinated the project for TDOT, from beginning to end. In his capacity as State RRC, Mr. Lanius attended all coordination meetings between the designer, contractor, and railroad. Mr. Lanius contributed to TDOT’s resolution of several issues which came up during each phase of the project. Variances for a decorative fence and the maintained connection of cranes to supported loads were approved by the railroad. Mr. Lanius reviewed and approved all invoices that CSXT submitted to TDOT related to the project for reimbursement by the Department.
