At the time this project was awarded, it represented the largest transportation project sent to construction by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). In total, four (4) CSX Transportation, Inc (CSXT) corridors in arrangements of over and under the interstate were impacted by this project. A total of nine (9) tracks were impacted over a stretch of 7.6 miles of construction which were going on simultaneously. In a first for Tennessee, Mr. Lanius negotiated, on behalf of TDOT, with the Design Build team to allow the use of a gantry crane to install girder sets over the CSXT corridor at I-65. The gantry crane would span the east and west bound lanes of traffic of I-440, suspending the load over traffic lanes until in position. Once the girder set was roughly in the right position, the gantry crane moved the load horizontally over the railroad corridor, placed and connected the members to the pier caps.
